The Story Of Porsche' s Cloverleaf Wheels

Jun. 05, 2020 7:00 PM ET by Michael Butler Design / 6 Comments And how Fuchs has stuck around for decades The more things change, the more they stay the same. That can be said of Porsche's long-lasting relationship with wheel manufacturer Fuchs, which has been supplying Porsche's cars for decades. Its latest product, made especially for the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition continues the 911 tradition that is as much a part of Porsche's legacy as its rear-engine layout or range of iconic steering wheels.
The first Porsche 911 to feature the "S" suffix in 1967 was distinguished from lesser models by a set of exclusive aluminum wheels amongst others, that were of course produced by Fuchs. The idea behind these wheels was that it complemented the rest of the 911 S' performance-focused approach: the 911 S was to be lighter than the standard car, and Fuchs' wheels helped the car shave of 6.6 pounds per wheel when compared to the steel equivalents. Porsche Porsche Porsche Porsche What we now know of as the classic Porsche cloverleaf design was born in 1965, and recordings from the first meeting between Porsche and Fuchs revealed Fuchs views on the wheel: "While our design was well-adapted to the shape of the series vehicles now being retired, the shape developed by Mr. Porsche Jr. appears more harmonious with the new vehicle". The rest as they say is history. 911 designer F. A. Porsche invented the cloverleaf design that has been synonymous with the Fuchs brand ever since, and Porsche centers across the globe still sell almost all versions of this iconic wheel design. Porsche Porsche Porsche The wheels designed for the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition feature polished spokes and rim flanges which stand out against the black sides of the spokes. The overall design is reminiscent of the original cloverleaf design. The ALMgSi1 aluminum alloy used is 97% pure and is supplemented by titanium, silicon, magnesium, and manganese. Porsche puts these wheels through stringent testing at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach where a cut is made and samples tested for durability. The good news is that these the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition wheels are available for all current 911 models as part of the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur range, and we hope the 911-Esque 2021 Panamera will be eligible too.
