Summer Vacation Canceled For Jeep And Challenger Factories

Typically at around this time every year, automakers temporarily shut down their production plants for what's called retooling, a multi-week-long process in order to prep the factories for model year changeovers or to make some repairs and update equipment. However, none of this will be happening this summer for several Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plants. According to Automotive News, FCA has confirmed it will not have summer shutdowns for several of its North American plants "in order to meet strong consumer demand." This decision makes complete sense due to the fact the factories had been closed for around two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. They now simply need to make up for the lost time. Dodge Dodge Dodge So, which FCA factories are forgoing retooling completely in order to keep running? Not so surprisingly, the ones that build the automaker's most popular models. The homes of the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, Dodge Challenger and Charger, and Ram 1500 will all skip the traditional summer break. Here's the list of factories: Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit; Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio; Sterling Heights Assembly in Detroit; Brampton Assembly in Ontario; Saltillo Truck Assembly in Mexico; and Saltillo Van Assembly. Other North American FCA plants, however, will have a summer shutdown of only one or two weeks, such as the Jeep Cherokee factory in Belvidere, Illinois, and the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, home of the Chrysler Pacifica. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The Detroit-area Warren Truck Plant, charged with building the Jeep Grand Cherokee, will have its shutdown extended "through the end of September as retooling continues for the launch of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer." For anyone who didn't take delivery of their new Jeep or Dodge muscle car at the original time, fear not. FCA is making sure you'll be getting your order in the very near future.
