Here' s What We Know About The Next Honda Civic Type R

Jun. 08, 2020 9:00 AM ET by Michael Butler First Look / 4 Comments Yes, a new model is currently in development. The Honda Civic Type R is a legend amongst gearheads, especially those who are into high-performance Japanese cars. The Type R's legacy began in 1996 with the launch of the EK9, and these days we get to enjoy the turbocharged FK8. According to Auto Express, the upcoming Type R will stick to its roots but will grow in size. With competitors such as the Subaru WRX STI and Hyundai Veloster N hot on its heels, the Type R has had to adopt more traditional turbo power in favor of high-revving naturally aspirated engines. Comfort has also taken up a more important role. So how will the next Civic Type R change things up? Honda Honda Honda Honda The current model has been around for three years and has recently undergone a facelift, but Japanese manufacturers work on a traditionally shorter production cycle, which means that the new Civic Type R is already in the advanced stages of testing. What the spy shots indicate is a much larger car with an extended wheelbase and larger front overhang.
Styling changes look to be more evolutionary than revolutionary: the new car still shares the current model's fastback body design, massive rear wing, and large splitter. What we can tell is that the new car will feature a center-exit exhaust pipe as featured on the current model. Honda Honda Honda Honda is pushing for electrification, but only for its mainstream European line, which means the Honda Civic Type R won't be featuring any hybrid technology and should stick with its turbocharged four-cylinder setup which currently produces 316 horsepower. We suspect the six-speed manual transmission will also be retained. Tom Gardener, senior vice president at Honda Europe, reaffirmed this when asked about the upcoming car: "We have our main pillars that are going to be electrified. Clearly we have a very famous product, such as the derivative of the Civic, which I guess is what you are referring to in the Type R, but no decisions have been made on that yet," he said. Production is also set to be moved from Swindon in the UK, to Japan. Honda Honda Honda Source Credits: Auto Express
