2024 BMW M5 Will Be As Powerful As Bugatti Veyron

May. 31, 2020 8:00 AM ET by Jay Traugott Rumor / 9 Comments Guess how this will be possible. Late last week we saw a very brief glimpse of the facelifted 2021 BMW M5 with no camouflage, indicating an official reveal isn't too far away. The regular and newly updated 2021 BMW 5 Series lineup just debuted and we expect styling upgrades like the new headlights and taillights to largely carryover to the F90 M5 (pictured here covered in camouflage). But let's fast-forward a few years here and discuss the next-generation M5, internally referred to as the G60 generation at BMW HQ in Munich, Germany. A new report coming from the UK's Car Magazine claims the G60 M5 will be - wait for it - electrified. This will be the first M car to exclusively be either purely electric or a "Power PHEV." In any case, it will be zero-emissions. Bugatti CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The report goes on to claim power will come from Gen V pouch-type batteries instead of Tesla-style round cells and will be built on the automaker's CLAR-WE electric architecture. The most powerful battery here will be rated at around 135-kWh can be connected to a 400-volt charger. It also appears 800-volt charging will be possible as well. But here's where things get really exciting: the G60 M5 will supposedly come powered by three 250 kW electric motors; one at the rear axle and two up front. This will come to 750 kW of power, or roughly 1,006 horsepower. That's right. A 1,000 hp+ M5! It's also important to bear in mind, however, that Tesla's also upcoming tri-motor Plaid configuration will surpass this output. Still, this will be, by far, the most powerful BMW M5 - or any M car - to date. CarBuzz CarBuzz BMW One reason why the M division has been given the greenlight to go all out with the next M5 may be due to the fact the production version of the Vision M Next concept has been dropped. BMW M didn't want to be completely without some sort of halo car so the M5 has received something of a promotion. Expect a WLTP-rated range of around 435 miles and a targeted 0-62 mph of 2.9 seconds. The completely redesigned G60 5 Series is expected to debut in the second half of 2023 as a 2024 model, followed one year later by the M5.
