Weekly Treasure M3-Powered BMW Wagon

May. 30, 2020 6:00 PM ET by Jay Traugott Car Culture / 3 Comments This isn't your typical family station wagon. You could go out and buy an Audi A6 allroad or, if your budget allows it, an Audi RS6 Avant, if you desire to drive something most people don't. Wagons have, for the most part, fallen out of fashion in the US but this doesn't mean they're completely extinct. Those two Audis are proof, along with crossover-wagons like the Subaru Outback and Volvo V90 Cross Country. The standard V90 wagon also deserves a shout out. But the market for a compact performance wagon is long gone. Perhaps it was never really there, at least in America. Those who want one may have to resort to more creative measures, and this particular BMW fits the bill perfectly. Up for sale on Bring A Trailer is this 1991 BMW 3 Series Touring (or wagon). Although the E36 3 Series coupe and sedan already debuted the year prior, the E30 wagon soldiered on for a little while longer. But this is no ordinary E30 wagon. Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Its current owner, who lives in Canada, imported the vehicle from Germany in 2006 and immediately got to work. Instead of the stock 3.2-liter inline-six, they installed an S52 3.2-liter turbocharged unit paired to a five-speed manual gearbox taken directly from a 1999 US-spec BMW M3 convertible. Total output is around 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. At the time of install, the S52 engine already had already been driven 58,000 miles. That number has since increased to 106,000 miles. Great cars must be driven. Other cool modifications include a limited-slip differential, custom exhaust, aftermarket wheels, BC Racing coilovers, and additional chassis bracing. The seller/modifier also rebuilt the brakes, replaced the fuel tank and pump, and installed aftermarket headlights (the original factory lights are included in the sale). In 2010, the car was completely taken apart and stripped for a new paint job. It also received new rocker panels. Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Bring A Trailer Although it's hard to notice from a distance, there are a few paint blemishes, specifically on the hood. There's also a dent in the passenger-side front door. The 16-inch aftermarket wheels are wrapped in Toyo tires. Inside, the cabin's seats and door panels come straight from an M-Technic Touring donor car. Another nice added convenience is the wring for an aftermarket stereo and amplifier. The seller also says there are few rips in the front carpet, but nothing severe. There's also a beautiful M-tech steering wheel and original factory instrumentation. Clearly this E30 M3-powered wagon is a labor of love built and maintained by an enthusiast. Hopefully its next owner will fix a few minor things and give it the same love and attention. Of course, they should drive the hell out of it, too. Pricing? As of this writing, the highest bid was $13,250, though there's still a few days to go until the auction ends.
