Chevy Working On Offroad Truck With Supercharged V8

May. 12, 2020 6:02 AM ET by Aaron Brzozowski Trucks / 7 Comments A blown 6.2L could be just the ticket to dethroning the F-150 Raptor. The reign of the sporty, high-powered street truck - a la GMC Syclone and Ford SVT Lightning - is long over. The size and heft of modern pickup trucks is such that building a high-performance street machine out of, say, a current F-150 would require massive brakes and superfluous springs and dampers. That's led automakers like Ford and GM to chase after off-road performance, instead - hence trucks like the F-150 Raptor. But for all GM's engineering know-how, the company has yet to produce a proper competitor. That could soon change, as deep in the annals of GM's Michigan technical center, the company is believed to be working on a hardcore truck or SUV with a "supercharged V8." Considering all of the Ram Rebel TRX hype, we're likely looking at an off-roader capable of taking on Ford's venerable Raptor, rumored to be called the Chevrolet Silverado "ZRX" based on trademark filings. Chevrolet Chevrolet Not much is known about the forthcoming Silverado ZRX, but according to a new rumor reported by TFLTruck, the truck's powerplant could be more than a match for the Raptor's 450-horsepower EcoBoost mill: a supercharged 6.2L V8 like the 650-horsepower LT4 that powered the last Corvette Z06, Camaro ZL1, and Cadillac CTS-V. That would be enough to put the ZRX well out of reach for the current F-150 Raptor, and to render it competitive against the anticipated Ram Rebel TRX - a truck expected to pack FCA's supercharged SRT Hellcat V8. Of course, there's also the 755-horsepower LT5 that ended up in the last Corvette ZR1.
Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet What's more, it's rumored that the supercharged 6.2L V8 could end up in a performance-oriented version of the Chevrolet Tahoe, either in addition to or instead of the ZRX. The resulting SUV, which could wear Chevrolet's legacy "SS" badge, could make a play for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk's corner of the market - or it, too, could go in more of a performance off-roader direction. Last year, there were reports of Cadillac working on a so-called Escalade-V with an LT4 supercharged V8. It's more than likely that this is the mysterious vehicle in the works, as previous reports have alleged that Chevy's Raptor-fighter will not be supercharged, as speculated. Maybe something new has developed since then, but time will ultimately tell. Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet Source Credits: TFLTruck
