Volkswagen Tiguan X Will Be A Stylish Coupe SUV

Aug. 03, 2020 12:40 PM ET by Martin Bigg Design / 7 Comments Of course Volkswagen wants to capitalize on the coupe SUV craze. Now that the restyled 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has broken cover, VW can focus on expanding the Tiguan lineup with new variants to capitalize on the SUV's popularity. For years, rumors have claimed Volkswagen is working on a new stylish coupe SUV version of the Tiguan to battle the BMW X4. Last month, we got our first look at China's Volkswagen Tiguan coupe, which will reportedly be called the Tiguan X and be based on the longer wheelbase Tiguan. Using these leaked images as inspiration, artist Nikita Chuiko has designed an accurate-looking render of the trendy Tiguan X showing what the regular wheelbase version will look like if it arrives in the US. Nikita Chuiko Nikita Chuiko Compared to the regular Tiguan, the Tiguan X has a noticeably lower roofline by around 1.7 inches and a longer rear overhang. The rear has also been completely restyled, incorporating new taillights connected with an LED light strip and a wider bumper. By contrast, the front will look similar to the standard Tiguan, sporting a wider grille and new standard headlights similar to the new Golf's. As with most coupe SUVs, cargo space and rear headroom will inevitably be sacrificed in favor of a more striking body style. A more powerful 220-hp version is also expected to go on sale in China. Sadly, the 184-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder is the only engine option available for the 2021 Tiguan in the US. European customers can also buy a hot Tiguan R with sportier styling and an increased output of 315 hp, as well as a plug-in hybrid variant with a combined 241 hp. It's still unclear if Volkswagen plans to sell the Tiguan X coupe in the US, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
