2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Looks Production Ready

Aug. 16, 2020 6:55 PM ET by Martin Bigg Spy Shots / 28 Comments The camouflage is starting to come off. While BMW has been busy preparing prototypes of the next-generation M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe for their production debut next month, our spy photographers have now caught the Bavarian automaker testing a prototype of the new 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible. Despite being a sunny day, the BMW 4 Series Convertible was being tested on the highway with the soft-top roof folded up.
Compared to previous prototypes, this BMW 4 Series Convertible is barely camouflaged. There is some camo applied to the rear, but the side profile and front fascia are completely undisguised, giving us a full view of the car's gigantic kidney grille carried over from the controversial 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz It's been a few months since the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe broke cover, so BMW probably thinks we're used to this new design direction. The redesigned headlights and air intakes are also fully on display, but the camouflage disguises modifications made to the rear to incorporate the folding roof. We'll have to wait for the covers to come off to see how this blends with the design. Like its coupe sibling, the 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible will be offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque in the 430i model and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 382 hp and 369 lb-ft in the M440i. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz An eight-speed automatic will be the only transmission option. 0-62 mph in the 430i Coupe takes 5.3 seconds with AWD, while the M440i will do the same sprint in 4.3 seconds. We're expecting the convertible version to be slightly slower due to the extra weight it will be carrying from strengthening the chassis. BMW hasn't announced when the 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible will debut. Since the new M3 and M4 are being unveiled next September, our best guess is at the 2020 LA Auto Show since organizers have confirmed the show is going ahead as planned in November.
