Here' s An Early Look At The New Mercedes GLC

Aug. 22, 2020 11:15 AM ET by Martin Bigg Spy Shots / 1 Comment The new larger Mercedes GLC could have enough room for seven occupants. The current-generation Mercedes GLC launched five years ago to replace the GLK, and demand for crossovers has been booming ever since. A mid-cycle update kept it looking fresh in the competitive crossover segment, but now Mercedes is working on the next-generation GLC. Back in June, the new Mercedes GLC was caught on video cruising the streets, but now our spy photographers have given two prototypes an extensive photoshoot after spotting them being tested on the road.
While this prototype is still at an early stage of development due to the fully camouflaged body, we can see that the new GLC will be wider and have a longer wheelbase than its predecessor while sporting a familiar shape. Its longer wheelbase means there's a good chance the new GLC will be offered with seven seats like the smaller GLB. The camouflage does a good job of disguising the styling changes, but we're expecting the new GLC to have a larger grille and slimmer headlights judging from other recent new Mercedes models. We can see the mirrors have moved from the corners of the side windows to the door blades. While it looks like the prototype has been fitted with sidesteps, they appear to be just for show since they have a "do not step sticker." CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz We weren't given a look inside the cabin, but the new Mercedes GLC will be fitted with the latest MBUX infotainment system, a fully digital dashboard, and all the latest safety assists. As for engine options, the new GLC will likely be offered with a choice of mild-hybrid four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, as well as plug-in hybrids. One of the prototypes appears to be a plug-in hybrid judging from the license plate. In Germany, electrified vehicles have an E at the end of the license plate. The second prototype also appears to have aerodynamic wheels, so it could also have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. More powerful AMG versions of the GLC will also join the lineup. Judging from the prototype's early state of development, we're expecting the new Mercedes GLC to debut in 2021 and go on sale for the 2022 model year. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz
