Moose Test Shows How To Drive Porsche Taycan Turbo S Fast

Aug. 26, 2020 8:25 AM ET by Karl Furlong Video / Comments Selecting the right driving mode makes all the difference. The moose test is like the perennial thorn in every manufacturer's side. Even a car as widely praised as the Toyota Supra came in for some criticism for its performance in the evasive handling test recently. The latest vehicle to undergo the stringent test is the Porsche Taycan, an electric luxury car that handles supremely well for its size and weight. In the test conducted by km77, the full-fat Taycan Turbo S was used. With up to 750 horsepower, it's one of the quickest accelerating cars on the planet, not that this test is about sheer power. As expected, the Taycan got off to a strong start with the testers praising it for its predictable responses and agile feel, despite its heft.

The Taycan eventually passed the test with a top speed of 78 km/h (48 mph), which is a solid result for a car that weighs in at 5,225 pounds. Testers pointed out that this extra weight hindered the Taycan when compared to a smaller EV like the Tesla Model 3; in fact, the Model 3 holds the entrance speed record (along with the Ford Focus) of 83 km/h (51.5 mph). However, it's the width and not weight that was pointed out as the main disadvantage for the Taycan. km77.com/YouTube km77.com/YouTube km77.com/YouTube At 77.5 inches wide excluding the mirrors, the Taycan has to navigate through the same lateral distance as some much smaller vehicles, so the chances of making contact with the cones are simply that much higher. The Model 3, for instance, is 4.7 inches narrower. In case you were wondering whether different driving modes actually do make a difference, the Taycan test proves this, with Sport + displaying improved maneuverability and control compared with the Normal driving mode, making it the safer choice for faster driving along a twisty stretch of road. So, although the cheaper and more compact Model 3 wins this battle of electric cars, the Taycan is still a safe, controllable, and responsive large sports sedan. Porsche Porsche Porsche
