If you haven't yet heard of the Ineos Grenadier, know this: it isn't a state-of-the-art grenade launcher. Far from that, it's a rugged, capable, classic-looking off-road SUV that's arguably more "Defender" than the new 2020 Land Rover Defender - not that we have a problem with the new Defender. But from the start, the idea for the Grenadier was to secure the tooling for the original, classic Land Rover Defender, and when that failed, Ineos simply crafted its own take on that design. But to hear Ineos tell it, it wasn't just the Land Rover Defender that inspired the Grenadier; it was a host of classic off-road SUVs. Ineos Automotive Ineos Automotive Ineos Automotive Ineos Automotive The Ineos Grenadier just made its public debut recently at the London Concours d'Elegance, where it appeared alongside a 1944 Willys Jeep, a 1980 Toyota FJ40, a 1988 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and of course, a Land Rover Series 1. Well, not just any Series 1; it was the first one ever produced. "We brought some of the great 4x4s of the past into the studio to look closely at what made them so enduring," says Ineos Automotive's Head of Design, Toby Ecuyer. "And now, it's fantastic to see Grenadier in the company of these legends. You can see common design traits and proportions, and certainly the same clarity of purpose.
