Presenting The 1 080-HP Lucid Air

Sep. 09, 2020 7:01 PM ET by Jay Traugott Reveal / 39 Comments The world's most powerful all-electric sedan has arrived. We've seen near-production ready prototypes but today is the real deal. Lucid Motors has officially unveiled the Lucid Air all-electric luxury sedan. When fully equipped, the Lucid Air is the world's most powerful and efficient EV. And yes, it will go on sale in America targeted specifically at the Tesla Model S. Before we get to that and pricing, let's talk specifics. The Lucid Air utilizes what the automaker refers to as the "Lucid Air Concept," the approach of making the drivetrain components as small and powerful as possible in order to have the most interior space, resulting is the largest frunk on the market. Lucid also notes that none of its construction materials and drivetrain components are outsourced from so-called "legacy" automakers. It's not uncommon for new automakers to purchase items from mainstream brands in order to save money and time. For starters, the Lucid Air is the world's fastest-charging EV, capable of charging at rates of up to 20 miles per minute via a DC Fast Charging network, translating to 300 miles range in a mere 20 minutes. The EPA has already given the Lucid Air an estimated range of up to 517 miles on a single charge. The Model S only has a maximum single-charge range of 402 miles. Like rivals, the Lucid Air will be offered with various power output levels. While the base Air hasn't had outputs confirmed, higher models range from 620 horsepower up to 1,080 hp in the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. In the latter, Lucid claims a quarter-mile time of 9.9 seconds, making it the only EV sedan capable of doing this sprint in less than 10 seconds. The most powerful version claims a 0-60 sprint of 2.5 seconds, the 800-hp Grand Touring in three seconds flat, and the 620-hp Touring in 3.2 seconds. The "race-proven" ultra-compact 113 kWh extended-range battery packs have undergone more than 20 million miles of testing. Along with having an abundance of space, the luxurious interior boasts a generally clean design with a 34-inch curved 5K display above the dashboard. Below the air vents is a retractable panel containing vehicle functions such as seat adjustments, lighting, and opening and closing of the doors. There are physical controls for steering wheel functions and climate settings. Another interesting feature is the Lucid DreamDrive driver-assist system that utilizes 32 sensors and high-resolution LIDAR to provide Level 2 and Level 3 self-driving capabilities. The sleek exterior includes a revolutionary headlight system comprised of thousands of "light channels" which Lucid claims to be the brightest, most precise, and most advanced system of its kind.

However, this version won't arrive until 2022 as pricier trims will come first. The 620-hp Air Touring starts at $95,000 and will come in late 2021. The $139,000 Air Grand Touring with 800 hp arrives in mid-2021. The $169,000 limited-run Air Dream Edition, available in three colors including an exclusive Eureka Gold, unique 21-inch wheels, and a Santa Monica-themed interior with full Nappa grain leather and Eucalyptus wood trim, will go on sale next spring. All prices exclude the available $7,500 US federal tax credit that the Model S is no longer eligible for. North American reservations are now open by way of a $1,000 refundable deposit. The Dream Edition requires a $7,500 deposit, also refundable.
