Official Hyundai Launches New Ioniq All-Electric Brand

Aug. 10, 2020 3:52 AM ET by Jay Traugott Electric Vehicles / 8 Comments Three electric vehicles are coming soon. After teasing a big announcement was imminent, Hyundai has today officially revealed a new brand dedicated entirely to battery electric vehicles. Dubbed Ioniq, it will sit alongside Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis under the Hyundai Motor Company umbrella when the first model launches in early 2021. The Ioniq name is already in use by the Hyundai Ioniq, a vehicle on sale as a plug-in hybrid or an EV. It appears this model will continue as Hyundai intends to differentiate it with the Ioniq brand by sticking to the existing naming strategy of Ioniq Electric and Ioniq Plug-In. Hyundai says the motivating factor to create the brand was "in response to fast-growing market demand." No time is being wasted as there are already three all-new models planned. Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai The Ioniq 5, a mid-size crossover based on the ultra-cool Hyundai 45 concept, will be the first to launch next year. We've already seen spy photos of the production version out testing. Following that in 2022 will be the Ioniq 6, a production version of the stunning Prophecy Concept. In 2024, the Ioniq 7 will debut, a large SUV that's being teased here for the first time. More Ioniq brand vehicles are already in the works, though their details remain secret for now. All Ioniq vehicles' designs will share a theme of "Timeless Value," meaning they'll be inspired by past vehicles. Ioniq models will ride on a dedicated platform called E-GMP, standing for Electric Global Modular Platform. The automaker promises this architecture will allow for "fast charging capability and plentiful driving range."

The platform paradigm shift will extend into the user interfaces that will be simple, intuitive and ergonomically designed to help occupants feel at ease."
This doesn't mean Kia and Genesis are done with EVs entirely, but Ioniq vehicles will be unique because they'll utilize a platform that won't be shared elsewhere. As a way to promote the new brand's official launch, Hyundai has turned the London Eye into a massive letter "Q" covered in electric lights. This certainly looks cool but we're far more interested in seeing the production models and if everything goes to plan, the Ioniq 5 will arrive in just a few months' time.
