VW Golf GTE HyRacer Is A Stunning One-Off

Aug. 21, 2020 7:41 AM ET by Sebastian Cenizo Tuning / 1 Comment This is hotter than any Golf R. Worthersee. Mention that name to any Volkswagen fanatic and you'll see their eyes instantly light up with the glint of a thousand diamonds. On the surface, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's just another tuner show, but it's backed officially by Volkswagen, and the brand brings exciting one-off projects to the Austrian lakeside every year. This year, thanks to the pandemic, the show was cancelled, but a project based on the Mk. 7 Golf GTE went ahead. As usual, it was built by VW trainees, and as usual, the finished product looks absolutely incredible. Volkswagen Volkswagen The car is called the Golf GTE HyRacer, and as the name suggests, it's built on the underpinnings of a hybrid Golf. A unique widebody kit was created with muscular fenders that feed into an aggressive front splitter beneath a new bumper. New side skirts and a large rear diffuser are also a part of the package, along with an aggressive roof spoiler that integrates a brake light borrowed from the Arteon. Unfortunately, only three pictures have been provided and none show the rear of the car in any detail, but we do get a sneak peek at the customized interior, and what an interior it has turned out to be. Volkswagen Volkswagen Tartan checkering adorns the seats and door panels while the dash and steering wheel have been retrimmed in Alcantara with blue contrast stitching. Despite being lowered almost 1.6-inches, the HyRacer offers some practicality with two electric scooters in the trunk. Other details include 19-inch lightweight wheels and a boost to 250 horsepower. As cool as the Mk. 8 GTI Racer is, we think this could be even better. Sure, it's based off the last generation of the Golf, but with talent like this always being fostered at VW, we have no doubt that next year's project will bring even more flair to the new Golf.
