Production BMW iNext Will Get A Brand-New Name

Product cycles for electric vehicles tend to be extremely long, which is why the rumors about their range and power estimates change frequently. The BMW iNext is the perfect example of this. The iNext Concept debuted way back in 2018 and won't arrive on the market until summer 2021. BMW should reveal the production version soon, but before it does, BMW Blog just shared some interesting new details. For starters, it won't be called iNext, nor will it be called iX5 as previous rumors indicated. The car will be around the same size as a BMW X5 (perhaps slightly smaller), but will reportedly go by the new name, iX. If true, the iX would be the first and only BMW model since the Isetta to not have a number in its name. BMW BMW CarBuzz Along with the news of the iX name, the reports claim BMW will offer three power outputs. The iX's electric motors will be roughly comparable to the gas engines used in the X5 with the base model producing around 308 horsepower. A more potent version, likely an M Sport, will produce around 522 hp. Finally, the range-topping version will produce about 610 hp using two electric motors, putting it within the same performance realm as the X5 M. Range estimates remain somewhat of a mystery, but the iX will need to travel around 300 miles on a charge in order to be competitive. BMW BMW BMW Global production is slated to begin in July 2021, though, as with most European electric cars, it may take longer before the iX reaches US shores. BMW already canceled the smaller iX3 for the US market, meaning it may be well into 2022 before you can buy an electric crossover from the brand. The iX will be late to the electric SUV market, but BMW hopes it can capture sales away from Audi, Jaguar, and Tesla when it does eventually arrive. CarBuzz CarBuzz Source Credits: BMW Blog
