Buick Regal Is Ending Production

With SUV, crossover, and sedan sales shrinking, car manufacturers have been forced to trim their passenger car lineups. Last year, we learned that the Buick Regal will be another victim of the crossover craze. Now it's time to say goodbye to the Buick Regal because the sedan has been discontinued. General Motors hasn't officially announced the Buick Regal's death yet, but the automaker confirmed to us last year it will be discontinued for the 2021 model year. Now, our sources have told us that production of the Buick Regal Sportback and TourX has officially ended in the US. This means Buick no longer has any sedans in its current model lineup, allowing the automaker to focus on the lucrative crossover market. Buick Buick Buick Sadly, the Regal's demise was inevitable when you look at the sales figures. Year-over-year sales for the Regal were down by nearly 20 percent in the first nine months of 2019. A GM spokesperson also told us last year that nearly 90 percent of Buick sales were crossovers. Slow sales are not the only factor that led to the Regal's demise, however. The Buick Regal is allegedly being discontinued in North America due to contractual obligations between GM and the PSA Groupe. GM sold Opel to the PSA Groupe in 2017, and now GM's agreement to purchase the Regal has ended. Buick Buick Buick While the Buick Regal is being discontinued in North America, the nameplate will live on in China. Likewise, the Opel Insignia, which the Buick Regal is based on, will still be sold in Europe after the sedan was recently redesigned for a new generation. The Buick Regal is offered in three flavors: the Regal Sportback, the sporty Regal GS, and the Regal TourX wagon. Power is provided by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing up to 250 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque in the Regal Sportback and Regal TourX, while the Regal GS is offered with a 3.6-liter V6 producing 310 hp & 282 lb-ft of torque.
