Ferrari Caught Testing Hardcore 812 GTO

Ferrari has a long-running tradition of launching a hardcore variant prior to a model's retirement. Notable examples include the Ferrari 599 GTO, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. It's also important to know the Gran Turismo Omologato moniker, or simply GTO, isn't given to just any supercar. It must be truly special to wear the badge. The Ferrari 812 Superfast, launched in 2017, is approaching the end of its lifecycle and that means a more extreme version is on the way. We first caught the Italian supercar company testing a heavily camouflaged vehicle last June and now our spy photographers have snapped some more detailed shots. In fact, there are two different prototypes shown here testing on the streets around Maranello, Italy. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz It appears there are some styling and mechanical changes at both the front and rear fascias. The front bumper, in particular, looks different than what's found on the 812 Superfast. At the back, there's a larger diffuser that stretches all the way to the corners and around the exhaust tips. The 812 Superfast and the open-top version, the 812 GTS, are powered by a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 rated at 789 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque. Power is directed to the rear wheels through a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Ferrari claims this V12 is the most powerful NA production car engine it's ever made. Could more power be extracted for the rumored GTO? CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The answer is probably 'yes' but shedding weight is another key goal in order to have the best possible power-to-weight ratio. Compared to the 599 GTB Fiorano, the 599 GTO had 661 hp - a 49 hp improvement. Meanwhile, the GTO shed nearly 220 pounds. The 599 GTO was essentially a street-legal version of the track-only 599XX. The 812 Superfast, however, does not have a track version, meaning it's possible Ferrari will hold off with the GTO name this time around. Ferrari claims it'll launch 15 all-new or successor models over the next few years, including its first-ever SUV, the Purosangue.
