2021 Hyundai Kona Arrives With Sharper Styling And New N Line

Sep. 03, 2020 6:15 AM ET by Martin Bigg Reveal / 5 Comments Hyundai's funky crossover gets a sporty new look for 2021. We've known for a long time now that a Hyundai Kona N is coming with a more aggressive exterior and improved performance. Hyundai isn't ready to lift the wraps off the hardcore Kona N just yet. Instead, the Korean automaker unveiled the refreshed 2021 Hyundai Kona line-up, which features updated exterior and interior designs, mild-hybrid engines, and a new sporty N Line variant. This is the first time the Kona has been given the N Line treatment.
Distinguishing the Hyundai Kona N Line is a motorsports-inspired front end featuring a body-colored front bumper and an aerodynamic lower lip with corner fins, larger air intakes, and a different mesh design for the lower grille. Body-color claddings and new rocker panels dominate the side profile, complemented with 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the interior is available with an N Line color package in one-tone black with cloth, leather or suede seats with red stitching. The N Line also features metal pedals and an N logo on the gear shifter and seats. For 2021, the standard Hyundai Kona has also received a refresh, with a striking new front-end featuring protective cladding panels. The hood now stretches over the redesigned grille, which is flanked by wider LED daytime running lights, while a front skid plate gives the Kona a more rugged appearance. Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai New taillights with horizontally stretched graphics grace the rear end along with a new bumper. In addition, the 2021 Hyundai Kona can be fitted with updated 17- or 18-inch wheels, while the outgoing model's 16-inch wheels carry over. Compared to its predecessor, the new Kona is 1.57 inches longer, giving it a sleeker look and more presence. Five new finishes have been added to the exterior color palette, including Surfy Blue, Dive in Jeju, Ignite Flame, Cyber Grey, and Misty Jungle. Every color can also be combined with a Phantom Black two-tone roof. The two-tone roof also comes with matching mirror housings.
Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Inside, the more upscale interior has extra cargo capacity and rear-seat legroom, as well as upgraded tech. As standard, the 2021 Hyundai Kona is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital cluster and an optional 10.25-inch screen for the infotainment system, while the size of the display audio screen has increased from seven to eight inches. By popular demand, an electronic parking brake has been added for convenience.
New ambient light technology illuminates the center cup holders, passenger and driver side footwells, and new aluminum accents on the speakers and air vents. New seat cover options include a black woven houndstooth design, cloth seats with black and grey embossing, and perforated leather seats in black, beige, or khaki. Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Under the hood, the range-topping 2021 Hyundai Kona is powered by a 1.6-liter T-GDI Smartstream engine with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission producing 195 horsepower that can be sent to the front or all four wheels. For increased efficiency, the Kona can be fitted with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology when equipped with the 1.6-liter Smartstream diesel engine rated at 134 hp, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or six-speed manual. Rated at 118 hp, the 1.0-liter T-GDI Smartstream petrol engine can also be equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an optional six-speed manual. Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai Hyundai The Kona Hybrid features a 1.6-liter GDI engine and an electric motor producing a combined 139 hp, paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. US powertrain options haven't been confirmed, however. Retuned suspension and steering results in a smoother ride, while the N Line has a unique tune. In Europe, the 2021 Hyundai Kona and Kona N Line will arrive in showrooms later this year, followed by the new Kona Hybrid in early 2021. The new Kona Electric will also be revealed soon.
