Toyota' s New $3 Million Hypercar Coming Soon

Aug. 04, 2020 7:10 AM ET by Martin Bigg Supercars / 12 Comments It will be a road-going version of Toyota's upcoming Hypercar Class Le Mans racer. We've been eagerly anticipating the debut of the new Hypercar Class at this year's 24 Hour of Le Mans race, which will replace the current LMP1 class. Originally, the famous endurance race was scheduled to take place in June this year but has been postponed until September 19, 2020 due to the pandemic crisis.
New regulations mean manufacturers can build racing prototypes that closely resemble existing road-going hypercars. Toyota and Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus have already confirmed they will compete in the new Hypercar Class, while Aston Martin has delayed plans to enter a racing version of the Valkyrie hypercar. Toyota Toyota Toyota Toyota previewed its new Le Mans hypercar racer with the Gazoo Racing GR Super Sport Concept at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon. Now, sources have informed The Supercar Blog that Toyota is planning to develop a road-going version of the GR Super Sport Concept. Racing regulations require manufacturers to build at least 20 homologated road-legal versions of their Hypercar Class race cars within two years. Details are still scarce, but the publication's sources claim the GR Super Sport road car will be powered by a "competition" twin-turbo hybrid V6 engine. The power output is still unknown, but Toyota's new hypercar will reportedly accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in less than seven seconds. Toyota Toyota Toyota The original GR Super Sport concept, on the other hand, utilized a twin-turbo 2.4-liter V6 hybrid powertrain producing a combined output of 986 horsepower. To comply with road regulations, the design of the street-legal Toyota GR Super Sport will need to be toned down since the concept doesn't even have a rear window. After the hypercar's competition debut, customer deliveries for the road-going Toyota GR Super Sport are expected to start in 2022, but it's unknown how many units Toyota will produce. Each example is expected to cost around €2.4 million ($2.8 million). Toyota Toyota Source Credits: The Supercar Blog
