2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV First Look Review A Higher EQ

by Karl Furlong Mercedes-Benz's answer to the BMW iX and Audi e-tron is this, the all-new EQE SUV. A mid-size luxury electric SUV, this could very well end up being one of the brand's top-selling models in markets like North America as gas models are gradually phased out. The EQE is easily identifiable as a member of the EQ family with its rounded styling elements, and it comes in three trims. The base model makes 288 horsepower and sends power to the rear wheels only, while a 536-hp version with 4Matic all-wheel drive tops the range. As expected, the cabin is bristling with technology and more screen real estate than in almost any other new car. If the EQE Sedan's body style isn't to your liking and the EQS SUV is too big, this could be the sweet spot in Merc's rapidly expanding EQ lineup.

When Is The Mercedes EQE SUV Coming Out

In the USA, the release date for the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is scheduled for some time in 2023.

2023 Mercedes EQE SUV Price And Competition

The price for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV remains unknown at this stage, but we can expect it to be close to the BMW iX. The iX xDrive50 starts at $84,100 and the M60 will cost $108,900; the latter is a better match for the AMG EQE SUV which we review separately. Unlike the iX, there is also a less powerful rear-wheel-drive variant of the EQE SUV, the EQE 350+. This could undercut the base iX by quite a healthy margin, possibly starting at around $75,000. The price of the 2023 EQE SUV will also likely overlap with the Cadillac Lyriq, which tops out at around $90,000. New Mercedes EQE SUV Exterior And Colors

Like other EQ models, the exterior of the new Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV shares familiar design cues like the front black panel unit with a three-dimensional star pattern. The one-bow cab-forward design is based on the brand's Progressive Luxury design philosophy. While the look is certainly modern and premium, Mercedes models are decidedly hard to tell apart from one another at a glance, and that is the case with the new EQE SUV and the larger EQS SUV. Standard features include LED High Performance headlamps, flush-fitting door handles, a panorama sunroof, and black wheel arch claddings. Wheel sizes range from 19 to 21 inches. Leading to the back, there is a continuous light strip that, once again, looks almost indistinguishable from the EQS SUV. With the EQE 500, the AMG Line exterior with sportier styling becomes standard, but even with this, the rear styling is rather unimaginative. Once the configurator goes live, we expect many of the same colors for the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV as on other Mercs like Polar White, Obsidian Black, and Cirrus Silver. More adventurous red and blue hues should also be coming. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes EQE SUV Dimensions

The dimensions of the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV aren't quite as large as the BMW iX. At 191.5 inches in length, the EQE is 3.5 inches shorter than the iX. With its mirrors, the EQE is 84.3 inches wide and 66.4 inches tall. All models have a 119.3-inch wheelbase, longer than the BMW's. At the time of writing, Mercedes had not shared the EQE SUV's curb weight figures, but we expect dual-motor, AWD models to weigh as much as 5,500 pounds. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV Engine And Performance

The new Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV lineup begins with the EQE 350+. This one has a single permanently excited synchronous motor that powers the rear wheels only. It makes 288 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds. Next is the EQE 350 4Matic which adds a front electric motor. Although power stays the same, it has much more torque at 564 lb-ft. This has had a negligible impact on the 0-60 time, which drops to 6.2 seconds. A more significant step up is the EQE 500 4Matic. Its two motors make 536 hp and 633 lb-ft, and it will hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. All models have a single-speed transmission and a top speed limited to 130 mph. The base BMW iX xDrive50 needs just 4.4 seconds for the 0-60 sprint, so it is a lot quicker than the base EQE; however, a less powerful iX xDrive40 that is sold in Europe would be a better match for the less powerful EQE. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz A comfort suspension system is standard, but an Airmatic air suspension is available optionally. With Dynamic Select, customers can choose from Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Individual modes. There is also an Off-Road mode for 4Matic models, and rear-axle steering is available for improved agility. Still, we expect the EQE SUV to be optimized for comfort more than anything else, but will reserve further comment until we have the opportunity to drive it. Like other luxury automakers, Mercedes has worked hard to create a unique aural experience to replace the sound of a traditional gas engine. Serene Breeze is a new soundscape that debuts in the EQE SUV and is designed to be relaxed and close to nature. On the other side is the Roaring Pulse soundscape that is "sonorous and extroverted." Range Charging And Battery Life

All EQE SUVs have a 90.6-kWh lithium-ion battery, and although EPA-rated range and MPGe data remain unavailable, European versions are said to be capable of a WLTP-rated range of around 340 miles. EPA data should be closer to 300 miles. With clever battery management software that can be updated over time, the energy management of the EQE SUV can be updated throughout the life of the vehicle. With 240-volt charging via the wallbox, it takes 9.5 hours to replenish the battery from 10 to 100%. Using DC fast charging at up to 170 kW, the battery can charge from 10 to 80% in 32 minutes. These charging and battery specs are fair, although the iX has both a bigger battery (111.5 kWh) and higher charging speeds (195 kW). Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes EQE SUV Interior And Cargo

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is suitably luxurious and brimming with the latest technologies. As standard is a 12.8-inch central OLED touchscreen interface along with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. There are three display styles for the screens (Understated, Sport, and Classic) to customize their appearance. The system includes Natural Language Understanding and Keyword Activation, and starting with a 'Hey Mercedes' voice command allows the driver to control numerous functions. The tech fest continues with standard wireless smartphone integration, wireless charging, a Burmester 3D sound system, fingerprint recognition for biometric authentication, and a surround-view camera system. Being a Mercedes, all the gadgets in the world would mean little without the requisite luxury to go with it. The seats in the Mercedes EQE SUV 350 models come with MB-Tex upholstery, while the 500 gets genuine leather. Heated front seats and a 64-color ambient lighting system are standard, but buyers can go for massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and four-zone climate control as options. Merc says there are five coordinated color combinations inside, including Sable Brown with Neva Grey, as well as Rose Gold elements. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz A comprehensive selection of driver-assist technologies are standard, including blind-spot assist, active lane keeping assist, and Parktronic. Adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and Merc's superb augmented reality for navigation are available optionally, but that isn't an exhaustive list in a car that can be outfitted with almost every feature imaginable. Although Mercedes is quite proud of the EQE SUV's compact dimensions - it is more compact than the EQE Sedan - that hasn't benefited trunk space. At 18.4 cubic feet, the cargo space in the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is dwarfed by the BMW iX's 35.5 cubes. It's possible to adjust the EQE's backrests to expand the space to 20 cubes, but that's still not amazing for a mid-size SUV. The 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seats in the EQE can be lowered to increase space for larger items. On a more positive note, the EQE SUV has more rear legroom than its iX rival.
