The Lucid Air Is A Spacious Sedan Designed To Hoon

That much is evident once you spend a significant amount of time in the company of the Lucid Air. The carmaker also takes a unique marketing approach, with the CEO hosting informative videos on YouTube. The second one just dropped, and it's a deep dive into the Air's packaging and design. Rawlinson used to work for Tesla and was in charge of bringing the Model S to market. But the Model S has been stagnating, leaving the door wide open for a company like Lucid to set the new standard. Lucid prides itself in thinking differently, so it launched the Lucid Tech Talks series. Think of it as a Ted Talk, but meant to dispel EVs myths. Lucid waited for the first customer deliveries to happen before posting this video to better help them understand their new toy. How did the company achieve that? Rawlinson is very clear on this topic. He never intended to join another EV company that outsourced any part of the car to a third-party company. Everything had to be done in-house, so Lucid would have complete control over everything. In short, relying on third-party components means you have to shape a car around somebody else's existing design. By moving everything in-house, you have complete control. A very basic example is Lucid's ability to sculpt the battery pack around the interior of the vehicle to allow for vast amounts of space for occupants. To demonstrate this, Rawlinson found his two tallest employees. Zak Edson, the VP of sales and service, and Mike Bell, the SVP of Digital. Both measure taller than six foot five. It looks big in images, but it's actually smaller than a Model S and the Merc EQS. The total length is 195.9 inches, while the overall width, including the mirrors, is 86.5 inches. But it wasn't just about the space. Rawlinson is also quite clear that he wanted to be able to hoon the Air. Rawlinson talks about the development of the Air like a young man talks about the birth of his first child. His passion for the topic is infectious, and it's highly enjoyable watching him draw the concept, and then demonstrate how it was implemented into the vehicle. Suffice to say that Rawlinson approached the car as an entity from a whole new angle, which is why the Lucid Air keeps on racking up the awards. But we won't spoil the fun.
