DeLorean Reveals Alpha5 EV With Gullwing Doors

May. 30, 2022 6:03 AM ET by Karl Furlong Reveal / 34 Comments Classic DMC-12 finally has a modern spiritual successor. Everyone likes a good automotive comeback story. From the third-generation Dodge Challenger that revived the nameplate in the early 2000s to the new Acura Integra, carmakers know that pandering to our natural sense of nostalgia is a powerful marketing tactic. The return of an individual model is one thing, but a comeback for a brand as a whole is another: Enter DeLorean. We've known for some time that the maker of the classic DMC DeLorean was plotting a comeback and that it would be an EV. Teased earlier in May, the company has now revealed the first images of the Alpha5, a car it hopes will reinvigorate the brand. DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean Penned by Italdesign, the Alpha5 is a futuristic coupe with gullwing doors that harken back to the automotive star of the Back to the Future trilogy. Other than the name and those doors, the Alpha5 is clearly from a different time compared to the DMC-12. It has the look of a luxury GT with its smooth, sensual lines. The rounded face with slim headlights is reminiscent of the Lucid Air sedan. Turbine-style wheels and louvers over the rear window are other prominent visual features. The rear showcases sleek horizontal lighting, including of the DeLorean name itself. The two doors are particularly large which should make ingress and egress easier for rear-seat occupants. Instead of a rear bench, it appears that the rear has two individual bucket seats. DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean The rest of the cabin boasts modern trends with a digital driver's display and a central touchscreen, both a lot sleeker than the interface in Dr. Emmett Brown's DeLorean time machine. As far as its electric powertrain goes, the Alpha5 will be more than ready for a dual with rivals like the Porsche Taycan. Amusingly, DeLorean quotes a 0-88 mph time of 4.35 seconds; 88 mph is the speed at which the classic DeLorean morphed from car to time machine in the classic film. The 0-60 time is 2.99 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph has been estimated. With a 100+ kWh battery, the Alpha5 will have a range of over 300 miles. None of these figures are 100% specific, so we expect the final specifications to differ somewhat. DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean "There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honored the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future," said Chief Marketing Officer Troy Beetz. "I think we did both with the Alpha5." CEO Joost de Vries promised that the Alpha5 is "for people who want to drive," which means this is likely to be less like a Tesla that puts the emphasis on straight-line speed, and more like a Taycan that emits zero emissions while still being entertaining to drive. The car will debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August ahead of going into production in 2024, but pricing remains unknown at this stage. DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean DeLorean
