LEAKED This Is The New Polestar 5

Jun. 05, 2022 5:50 PM ET by Chris Teague Electric Vehicles / 4 Comments The sleek four-door EV is expected in 2024. Polestar split from Volvo in 2017 and immediately began turning out vehicles with striking Scandinavian style and impressive performance. The Polestar 1 is an exciting hybrid, and the Polestar 2 is a stunning EV. Now, thanks to patent documents unearthed in the European Union Intellectual Property Office, we're learning more about the Polestar 5. The car's design leaked out from documents filed by Polestar itself. The vehicle is expected in 2024 and will land as a sleek performance sedan. Polestar teased the 5 late last year, shown then as the Precept concept. Though we're now calling it the Polestar 5, the car is strikingly similar to the concept and shares much of its external bodywork and styling. Concepts don't have to consider safety and structural regulations, so the 5 will lose its reverse-opening rear doors and gain a third brake light. CarBuzz European Union Intellectual Property Office European Union Intellectual Property Office European Union Intellectual Property Office European Union Intellectual Property Office Polestar hasn't detailed the 5's powertrain, range, or performance figures yet. That's not super surprising, considering that it's still two years out, but we can gain some insights looking at the Polestar 5's competition. The Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan currently sit atop the segment in terms of performance, so the Polestar 5 will need to offer better than modest grunt to compete. Still, the styling from the Precept is very much here in full force. We can also see that Polestar looks to be offering the car with a panoramic sunroof, as well as a nearly identical front and rear fascia. One of the larger differences between the two will likely be ride height, as well as the omission of any bodywork that may break EU and US safety regs. When the Precept Concept debuted, Polestar promised that the production car would follow its sustainability goals. The car used various sustainable materials, including recycled PET bottles, reclaimed fishing nets, and recycled cork vinyl. Flax composite materials make up several interior and exterior components. The plant is Polestar's second in China and will be carbon-neutral. The Polestar 2 is built in Volvo's plant in Luqiao, China, where the XC40 is manufactured. The Polestar 1 is built in Polestar's Chengdu, China facility, which runs entirely on renewable energy. We're here talking about the Polestar 5, but the automaker has two new models to reveal before we reach that vehicle. The Polestar 3 SUV is expected to land as a premium electric performance SUV later this year, and the Polestar 4 should show up sometime in 2023.
