A month ago, Nissan debuted its new Z racer, destined for the hallowed asphalt of the Fuji 24 endurance race. This isn't the only place the Z is going racing, but it's certainly one race series that's "close" to a stock Nissan Z you might be able to buy from a dealer. Now, that concept has officially hit the tarmac, says Nissan. The two cars, numbered 230 and 244, will be raced by a NISMO team and the Max Racing team, respectively. Nissan calls these cars "concepts," but rest assured, these are the real deal. Both will be racing as of June 4 and 5, so be sure to check the standings to see how they've done. It's a long race, and just about anything can happen. Nissan Nissan Nissan Nissan That's especially true of the #230 car. Nissan has revealed that car will have something your average Nissan Z won't: an engine capable of running on carbon-neutral-fuel (CNF). Unfortunately, details on how Nissan managed that are slim. Still, making a 400 hp twin-turbo V6 out of a production car push more power via CNF is an impressive feat. That car is there largely for experimental development, sort of like Porsche's sustainable fuel project. The other car, #244, run by Max Racing, gets your everyday, run-of-the-mill gasoline engine. Well, not "run-of-the-mill." This is still a race car engine, after all. Unfortunately, Nissan remains tight-lipped on outputs. This being a race car and all, that's giving away team-only info, so we'll give Nissan a pass there. Still, it's safe to say these are both producing more than the Z's stock 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Nissan Nissan CarBuzz CarBuzz Nissan isn't shy about the development potential here, either. Head of Motorsports Business Unit Office and president of Nissan Takao Katagiri said: "We are entering this 24-hour endurance race with two vehicles, one fueled by CNF, because the tougher the race, the more we learn. We expect to acquire ample data and know-how for future vehicle development." Best case, that means we'll get a clean, green Nissan Z in the future.
