Polestar Thinks Automotive NFTs Are Dumb

Jun. 02, 2022 3:47 PM ET by Chase Bierenkoven Industry News / 8 Comments How about the real thing instead of something you can only use in the metaverse? To be frank, the idea of getting an NFT of an Acura Integra you already own was a really bad idea. Why the hell would we care about some pixels on a screen, especially for an enthusiast car we're more likely to go out and drive?? Of course, to be fair to Acura, it's not the only one. Lamborghini sells NFTs of cars you can actually drive all the time. Again, why care about that when you've got the real thing in your garage or more to the point, why buy the NFT when you can get some sick Lambo memorabilia in your home instead? Perhaps we're just ignorant of the whole NFT thing. But Polestar seems to agree. Rather than offer its customers an NFT as part of a new referral program, it would rather send you some hand-drawn art instead. Guess which we'd rather have? The real thing. Or better yet, a Polestar 2. Polestar Polestar Polestar Polestar First, a bit more on the referral program. Polestar has launched the program in Europe, South Korea, and the US, and applies to all new vehicle purchase methods. Existing customers can generate a unique referral code via their Polestar account, which can then be linked up to a referred customer's account prior to their purchase. After that, the new buyer gets either charging credits (roughly $107 USD worth), or a Google Nest Hub and Nest Mini. Existing customers will be eligible for several rewards depending on their "reward tier," which is likely based on the number of referrals. Prizes include Polestar hoodies, charging credit (only for the EU and South Korea), or the Google bundle. Or, "a unique design sketch created by one of Polestar's designers." Polestar's CEO puts it better than we can: "The original design sketch idea is really special, each one being drawn on paper by one of our artful Polestar designers. We are being thoughtful about this - we could easily take the popular NFT route and make bespoke digital artworks but will wait until there is a real, environmentally-friendly benefit to using NFTs. Given their questionable sustainability credentials and our desire to make each sketch something tangible that might be mounted in a special place, we intend to deliver real sketches instead." Put plainly, Polestar doesn't think NFTs are worth much, at least not right now. Fair, given the recent decline in both the NFT market and the cryptocurrency market. Given how Polestar models tend to look, we'd much rather have a hand-drawn sketch than one that'll supposedly gain or lose value digitally. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz Polestar

Law school was just a means to an end, after all. His first writing job was freelance and barely paid his grocery bill. It quickly turned into a full-time position, eventually leading Chase to join CarBuzz in 2022. Chase now tests cars, and sits comfortably at the news desk when he's not in the driver's seat. In his spare time, Chase can be heard trying to play guitar, or out enjoying Colorado's natural splendor in his BMW M3.
