TEASED A Very Special Subaru WRX Is Coming

May. 19, 2022 3:05 PM ET by Chase Bierenkoven Sports Cars / 8 Comments But what could it be? If you're not head-over-heels in love with rally racing, you might not have heard of Prodrive. The company recently made the rounds online after it announced the Prodrive Hunter, a low-production, 600-hp off-road hypercar. That was basically a road-leal version of rally champ Sebastian Loeb's Dakar race car. This morning, the company teased something with slightly wider appeal. Something to do with the Subaru WRX. At least, we're figuring that's what this is. First, Prodrive used to do a lot of work with Subaru. The motorsport firm helped Subaru win the World Rally Championship a grand total of six times. Three drivers' titles and three manufacturer's titles. Second, just look at the silhouette of the car in the teaser. https://twitter.com/prodrive/status/1526928449813741570 Prodrive Subaru Subaru Some folks on car Twitter started speculating that this teaser was for what could be a restomod of the Subaru WRX. It's a possibility. Clean WRX models are a tough thing to come by, especially with low miles. We routinely watch sorted WRX STIs sell at auction for nearly what they were worth new, if not more. Given the way the auto market is trending toward EVs, now could be the time for such a thing. If that is the case, it'll likely feature standard restomod fare. That means a pretty thorough restoration of the car, followed by some modern updates. In the case of the WRX, we're betting that means leaning into its rally roots, as well as making the interior less Subaru WRX and more Singer 911. Prodrive Prodrive Prodrive The comments section of the Twitter post above brings another possibility to mind: an electric WRX. Again, this makes sense given the way the auto industry is trending towards EVs. It's hard to say that couldn't be in the works. However, there is a third possibility. 1995 was the first year of Prodrive's World Rally Championship win and an important one at that. Colin McRae won with co-driver Carlos Sainz (the older one, not the F1 one). And he did it at the wheel of the now-famous Subaru rally car. Perhaps some sort of tribute is in the works. Either way, the tweet from Prodrive states more information will be available on May 25. We'll find out just what is what on that day. Prodrive Prodrive Subaru Subaru
