Chevy Corvette Z06 Sounds Like An F1 Car At The Indy 500

May. 29, 2022 6:06 PM ET by Chase Bierenkoven Supercars / 9 Comments Angry V8 noises are gone from F1, but not from Chevy. We're still not really over the loss of the pre-hybrid era Formula 1 engines. There wasn't a whole lot out there that sounded like them. A few cars, especially older V8 Ferraris get close, but nothing quite hits that same spot. Well, here's another entrant into the "sounds like an F1 car" cliche. There's some truth to this one, largely helped by the Z06 'Vette's flat-plane V8. The official pace car for this year's Indianapolis 500 is the Chevy Corvette Z06, and new footage has come along that presents quite an argument for the new V8 supercar. It sounds, in a word, incredible. We haven't really gotten to hear one at pace, especially not out in the open, and definitely not from inside the car. Chevrolet Chevrolet Drive 615/YouTube Drive 615/YouTube Thankfully, Byron Glover Jr. (Drive 615 on YouTube, and @drive615 everywhere else) found out for us. First and foremost, it sounds loud. In just about every shot of the above video, the Z06's exhaust echos off whatever surface happens to be nearby. It's so loud, we bet it'd set off car alarms if spun up in a parking lot. Glover even has to raise his voice the closer he gets to the car. Of course, that only adds to the "old F1 car effect" once the car is out on track. Hearing it coming, you'd think it was a race car until the thing comes into view. It sure moves like one, with 670 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The real news here is the ride-along that Glover got. While the Z06 will be offered as a 'vert for better exhaust enjoyment, the noise inside the cabin will make up much of how owners experience that engine. We can also see the driver using the car's built-in lap recording software, which Chevy calls Performance Data Recorder. Chevrolet Chevrolet Drive 615/YouTube Drive 615/YouTube In the ride-along, we get a look at just how quickly the car accelerates, especially down the straight. Inside, it sounds like all hell is breaking loose. Maybe that's because this is likely a pre-pro car, but we're hoping that noise sticks around for production cars. It sounds just as good inside as out, which is rare praise for a street car. At one point, the driver hits 163 mph down one of Indy's straights and looks like it could keep going. For the curious, the Indianapolis 500 is happening today, May 29th. It'll be over by the time you read this, but the race is easily America's most iconic and features some heavy-hitting drivers. McLaren's Pato O'Ward is in attendance and F1 fans will have Romain Grosjean to root for as well, with the race being a first for the ex-Formula 1 driver. Let's just hope we get to see more of the Z06 before the weekend is out, despite the racing ending today. Drive 615/YouTube Drive 615/YouTube Chevrolet Chevrolet
