Volkswagen Production Getting Back Up To Speed

We finally have some good news to report regarding global parts shortages. While the semiconductor chip shortage continues to reign havoc on the automotive industry, Volkswagen can now at least take some comfort in the fact that its main EV plant is finally increasing output. While VW is not immune to the chip shortage, it was dealt another blow when Putin decided to invade Ukraine. Volkswagen currently owns the Nizhny Novgorod factory in Russia, though it is in the process of cleaning out. Russian workers are being paid to quit their jobs, and we don't see the German brand returning anytime soon. In addition to producing the Tiguan, Polo, and Skoda Rapid, VW's Russian operations were also responsible for making wiring looms. While no details are available, VW's fresh supply of parts means the Zwickau EV factory in Germany can start resuming a three-shift operation. According to Automotive News, production is expected to increase to 1,300 vehicles per day, up from just 900 cars per day during the supply chain crisis. Shortly after the Russian invasion, Volkswagen had to suspend operations in Germany for three weeks, which led to a massive backlog. Sadly, this happened when demand for the ID. 4 was at an all-time high. It's also the main reason why Toyota is so far ahead in the sales race. The problem is not limited to Volkswagen but other brands within the group. The Zwickau EV factory is also responsible for manufacturing the ID. 3, ID. 5, the Audi Q4 e-tron, and the Q4 Sportback e-tron. Cupra's electric vehicles will also be built there. The ID. 4 is such a smash hit that VW will soon be starting production at two additional locations. An ID. 4 production line will soon open in Emden, Germany.
