It can't hope to match the Lexus on standard specification but does, at least, beat out the BMW. Even the base model receives LED headlights, three-zone climate control, and heated leather seats. The problem with the A4, for some, is its rather anonymous appearance. While the blue and white roundel conjures up images of sports cars and racing heritage, the four rings on the front of the A4 don't quite have the same allure. Wearing a sharp suit and blessed with impeccable build quality, the Lexus IS is a massively appealing compact luxury sedan. Despite the contemporary appearance, Japan's Audi A4 rival is rather ancient - it first saw the light of day in 2013. A facelift in 2021 has given the IS a particularly striking new look but hasn't addressed issues surrounding interior space - or the recalcitrant infotainment system. This can, however, be forgiven when you realize the 2022 Lexus IS has a starting MSRP of $39,125. Even the range-topping IS 350 F Sport AWD represents great value at $45,550. There's plenty of choice for buyers in the lineup: the 241-horsepower IS 300 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the IS 300 AWD with a 260-hp 3.5-liter V6, or the IS 350 F Sport with 311 hp. 350 derivatives are available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive, and in RWD guise, the 350 F Sport can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. There's not much to get excited about for the 2022 model year; the Lexus IS received a host of revisions in 2021, so changes for the new year are minimal. The IS 300 is now available with a new $4,120 Premium Package, which includes several additional convenience and style-enhancing features. Elsewhere, the Comfort Package gains an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a Homelink system and rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers. The IS 350 F Sport hasn't been left out. By no means is the Lexus IS an unpleasant car to drive but, when compared to its rivals, it falls short in several key areas. Not as engaging as a 3 Series or as cosseting as a C-Class, the Lexus straddles the line between the two areas but doesn't excel in either. Still, the ride quality is rather good and keeps the bumps and potholes at bay. The larger 19-inch wheels can catch the suspension out, though. Through corners, the engaging chassis comes into play. It's surprisingly entertaining in the twisties, with plenty of feedback sent through the communicative steering. It's no 330i, though, but is still a joy to pilot at nine-tenths. Push it hard enough and traces of understeer will surface. Grip levels are high, particularly on AWD models, but the rear-wheel-drive models are nearly as tractable. Despite the sporting pretensions of the F Sport, it's no canyon carver. The turbocharged four-cylinder feels a touch more engaging in corners, but can't match the power (and sound) of the V6-powered models. F Sport models also receive a limited-slip differential (for the RWD model) and a sportier exhaust note, among other things. If you spend any time behind the wheel of a Lexus product, you'll come to appreciate the overwhelming sense of solidity and quality. The company's smallest sedan offering is no different. Here, the appeal is uplifted by the gorgeous styling, well-crafted cabin, and remarkable amount of standard safety features. With pricing kicking off at $39,125, it represents incredible value - but there's no hiding its age, and the talented competition really does highlight its shortcomings. Performance and cargo space are both middling at best, but the IS strikes back with dramatic exterior styling, stellar dependability, and impressive levels of safety. If you're a die-hard Lexus fan, you'll love it. For everyone else, test drive the competition before signing on the dotted line. The 3 Series may be pricier - and not as well-equipped - but there's a reason it is the consummate car in this class. It drives beautifully, nearly matches the IS for perceived build quality, and boasts a more spacious, logically laid-out interior. Still, there's lots to love about the Lexus (unless you're in the back seat). Its reputation for reliability is incredible; for some, that's all that matters. There's a reason the BMW 3 Series has ruled its segment for more than four decades. Over the years, BMW has mastered the art of the compact luxury sedan and, in the case of the latest G20, has perfected the recipe. The exterior has escaped the styling treatment bestowed upon pricier BMW vehicles; it's understated, as a 3 should be. The interior is a masterclass in common sense and quality, although BMW could learn a thing or two about fit and finish from Lexus. Compared to the 2022 IS range, the BMW wipes the floor with its Japanese contemporary with more interior space, a usable cargo area, superior gas mileage, and a far more engaging drive, it is a no-brainer for some. Interestingly, even the base 255-hp 330i is as fast to 60 mph as the 311-hp IS 350 F Sport is, and quicker still when specified with xDrive. It boasts a higher top speed, too. The Lexus does claw back some points in a few places. It's not quite as ubiquitous as the Bavarian sedan and does have more distinctive styling. It's cheaper - approximately $3,000 separates the pair. What's more, the BMW can't match the Lexus when it comes to specs. If you want the ultimate expression of an athletic compact luxury sedan, look no further than the Bimmer.
