2022 Ghost Performance

The Rolls-Royce Ghost uses the traditional engine layout. That means it has a six-and-three-quarters V12, twin-turbocharged for extra low-down torque. This giant engine produces 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, which isn't all that impressive. A BMW M550i has roughly the same horsepower. The result of relatively low power combined with a hefty curb weight is evident when you glance at the claimed acceleration and top speed figures. The Ghost sprints from 0-60 mph in a (relatively) leisurely 4.6 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155 mph. To stare blindly at these figures is missing the point, however. When you're behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce, you have nothing left to prove. Why clutter the mind with nonsensical details like those mentioned above? The goal here is effortless power. A Rolls-Royce should never force you deeper into the seat as it accelerates toward the horizon. Instead, you want a smooth, effortless power supply to the wheels. Rolls-Royce manages to get it spot-on thanks to an all-wheel-drive system and the smartest and smoothest eight-speed automatic ever produced. Thanks to various sensors, including feedback from the onboard GPS, the automatic transmission will swap cogs without you noticing. It fades beautifully into the background, which is precisely what you want in this kind of car. It's hard to believe that the power is transferred to the road by anything as rudimentary as a casing full of gears.

Engine and Transmission

As mentioned earlier, the Ghost uses a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 producing 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The horsepower is almost irrelevant in this car. What you really want is torque because it provides that effortless feeling we've been chattering about. The full 627 lb-ft of torque is produced from just 1,600 rpm, and the result is glorious. It creates the illusion that the Ghost is pushed forward by a giant invisible hand rather than a series of small explosions. Because the torque is available almost instantaneously, the Ghost never feels underpowered. It hustles along in every situation you can possibly think of. The gearbox can even read the future. To ensure you always have access to all that torque, the Ghost will read the road ahead. Information about upcoming corners, hills, and descents is provided to the gearbox via the GPS. Before you even get to one of those obstacles, the engine and gearbox are already primed to provide adequate power. There are no paddles behind the steering wheel because why would you? If you can afford a Ghost, there's a good chance you have several other cars that provide a more engaging driving experience.

According to the EPA, the Ghost will consume gas at a rate of 12/19/14 mpg city/highway/combined. That's hardly surprising considering the weight and engine size. The average owner won't be bothered by the fuel price, but horrendous fuel consumption has another consequence. When combined with a small gas tank, you must stop for a refuel every two to three days. That kind of hindrance is simply unacceptable at this level. This is the biggest chink in the Ghost's armor - it has a 19.8-gallon gas tank, but, in a best-case scenario, it will burn through it in 277 miles. The Black Badge Ghost and Ghost Extended have exactly the same EPA ratings.
