2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale First Look Review Italian Renaissance

by Jay Traugott It was back in 2019 when Alfa Romeo unveiled the Tonale concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The media and the buying public very much approved of the sexy Italian styling; everyone was anxious to see it reach production. That's finally happened following some last-minute delays initiated by Alfa Romeo's new CEO. Introducing the new 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale crossover that looks ready to enter the competitive compact luxury crossover segment. The Tonale rides on the same platform as the Jeep Compass and Renegade, but it's been modified for Alfa's purposes.

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Price And Competition

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale price has yet to be announced, but expect the cost to be competitive with rivals, so we figure an MSRP of at least $35,000. Fully loaded, a $50k price tag should be expected.
The Tonale is intended for young personalities who enjoy going out for a night on the town and taking on some spirited driving roads. With that in mind, the Tonale's main rivals will include the likes of the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and the Range Rover Evoque, which is often considered to be the segment leader. The Tonale aims to change that. The Evoque has a claimed 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds while the X1 and Q3 are slightly faster. The Tonale should be able to either match or beat those times.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Sexy Italian Styling

There's no doubt the stunning Tonale concept's design heavily influenced the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale exterior. Alfa Romeo says styling influences came from various historic models, such as the 1960s era Giulia GT Junior-inspired 'GT Line' that runs from the rear all the way to the headlights. There's even some 8C Competizione inspiration by way of the rear window. Aside from the debut blue color pictured here, we expect the palette of Alfa Romeo Tonale colors to offer some unique choices; nothing official has yet been announced. Up front, there's the Alfa-exclusive 'Trilobo' 3+3 full LED headlight design that pays tribute to the SZ Zagato. There's also the 'Scudetto' shield proudly situated in the center. The taillights have a similar design theme as the headlights and we really like the wraparound design and light signature. And yes, Alfa fans will immediately notice the alloy wheel design found on many other iconic models.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Engine And Performance Two Great Options

Alfa Romeo Tonale engine options include the following: PHEV Q4 AWD and Q4 AWD. Green-focused buyers will gravitate towards the plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive. This consists of a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. A torque figure was not provided. A 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery provides juice for the 90-kW electric motor for a total best-in-class output of 272 horsepower. A 30-mile all-electric range is also possible. Performance specs such as 0-60 mph and top speed have not been announced. Next up is the 2.0-liter turbo-four with 256 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and linked to a nine-speed slushbox. To help conserve fuel, stop-start tech is included here. Three driving modes are available: Dual power/Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency. Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo Tonale Interior And Cargo

Significant focus was placed on the Alfa Romeo Tonale's interior. Inside, there's an overall sporty and luxurious layout. With inspiration taken, once again, from the carmaker's racing past, owners will discover a driver-focused, two-row interior packed with plenty of aluminum trim. The seats of the Alfa Romeo Tonale are covered in sumptuous leather and Alcantara suede. While the Alfa Romeo Tonale's trunk space/cargo figures are not yet available, cargo space will likely be competitive with other crossovers in this segment. The Tonale comes equipped with Stellantis' excellent Uconnect 5 infotainment system, a 10.25-inch customizable touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver's gauge cluster, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, in-vehicle Amazon Alexa, and over-the-air updates with the Alfa Connect mobile app. This smartphone-based tech is capable of starting the engine, locking and unlocking the doors, and receiving vital notifications. Interestingly, the Tonale is the first vehicle to come with a non-fungible token (NFT) digital certificate based on blockchain. Assuming the driver approves, the NFT is capable of recording vehicle data and provides certification that the vehicle has been maintained properly, something that'll come in handy one day in the used vehicle market.
