There are plenty of reasons that would prevent a computer from being able to connect. Then, there are more technical and harder to pin down causes. The trick is figuring out which one it is. If that doesn't alleviate the problem, continue. Remove a VPN connection. If you’re currently using a VPN or a proxy to connect to the Internet, it’s best to disable it temporarily to rule it out as a cause. It might be blocked or interfering. If you have a VPN application from your provider, use it first to disable the VPN. Try Windows Update Troubleshooter. Microsoft offers its own automated solution from the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Run the troubleshooter, and with any luck, it’ll diagnose and solve the issue. Change the DNS servers. Domain Name System (DNS) servers route your computer to the right servers to find the websites you’re looking for. They’re an essential part of your computer to make a connection with the Windows Update servers. If you can’t connect to Windows Update, a bad DNS server might be the cause.
