According to The Verge, an email was sent out to Amazon Kindle customers on Wednesday explaining the new changes. Older Kindles that do not have Wi-Fi built into them will not be able to connect to the internet in December. Getty Images/Carolin Voelker The change comes as mobile carriers switch from 2G and 3G connections to 4G and 5G technology. The email explains that specific Kindle devices still will work with Wi-Fi only and that even older devices won’t be able to connect to the internet at all, so users would have to download books via a USB cable. The Verge reports that the third-generation Kindle Keyboard, the fourth-generation Kindle Touch, Kindle Paperwhite (fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh generation), the seventh-generation Kindle Voyage, and the eighth-generation Kindle Oasis will only be able to download new books when connected to a local Wi-Fi network. The much older Kindle devices that won’t be able to download via Wi-Fi at all include the Kindle (1st and 2nd generation) and the second-generation Kindle DX. ...You'll probably see more companies with older devices making similar announcements to Amazon's. Amazon is offering customers with older Kindle devices a $50 off code to switch to a new Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Oasis, as well as $15 in eBook credits. The newer Kindle devices will cost you between $90 and $250. AT&T will phase out its 3G network by February 2022, T-Mobile by April 2022, and Verizon by December 31, 2022, so you'll probably see more companies with older devices making similar announcements to Amazon's.
