What to Know

Go to website in Edge browser > select Immersive Reader icon or press Ctrl+Shift+R.Click Immersive Reader icon or press Ctrl+Shift+R again to turn off.Hover at top of screen to view settings for Text Preferences, Reading Preferences, or Grammar Tools. This article explains how to use Immersive Reader (formerly Reading View) on Microsoft Edge version 8.10 and newer in Windows 10.

How to Turn On Immersive Reader

When active, Immersive Reader makes the content you're reading the focal point in the browser. To switch to Immersive Reader in Microsoft Edge: Open Microsoft Edge. Go to a website that has the content you want to read, such as a news site. Select the Immersive Reader icon, which looks like a book with a speaker on it, on the right side of the address bar. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+R. If the icon is missing or greyed out, the web page doesn't support the Immersive Reader feature. Select the Immersive Reader icon again (or press Ctrl+Shift+R) to turn off Immersive Reader. When using this feature, the Immersive Reader icon turns blue, and Microsoft Edge reformats the web page to improve its readability and removes navigation elements. The page is formatted to fit the window, and graphics are replaced with an icon and alt text describing the image. To have Immersive Reader read the web page to you, move the cursor to the top of the browser window or right-click anywhere on the page, and then select Read aloud.

How to Change Immersive Reader Settings

You can tweak some Immersive Reader settings to provide a better experience. To customize the settings, complete the following steps while Immersive Reader is turned on: Hover at the top of the page to view the Immersive Reader settings. Go to Text preferences, then move the Text size slider to increase or decrease the font size. You can also adjust the text spacing. Under Page themes, select a background color for easier reading. Go to Reading preferences, then use the Line focus setting to help you focus on one, three, or five lines at a time. Go to Grammar tools, then turn on Syllables to split words into syllables. You can also color-code the nouns, verbs, and adjectives on the page. When you're finished customizing the Immersive Reader settings, select the page to continue reading. Was this page helpful?
